Incarcerated meaning?

What does incarcerated mean? Would anyone that is incarcerated be in jail for a long time? My boyfriend is in jail turned himself in for a charge of burglery. He did not commit that crime I was with him. It says on the imate list his name and above all the names it says incarcerated.. Please help? Thanks in advance
